After several years of financial struggle, J.C. Penney finally shows signs of recovery. According to its latest financial report, the company narrowed its sales decline and closed the second quarter in profit, something it hadn’t achieved in a while.

Total net sales for the quarter dropped 3.4% year-over-year, reaching $1.4 billion, while credit income climbed 10% to $65 million. Despite the slight dip in sales, the retailer posted a net profit of $110 million, compared to a $33 million loss during the same period last year.

A More Stable Margin and Growing Categories

Gross margin held at 38.7%, only slightly below last year’s 39.4%, thanks to improved markdown and distribution management. The company reported strong performance in basics, sleepwear, footwear, home goods, kidswear, and men’s apparel.

Store and online traffic improved, supported by a refreshed marketing strategy emphasizing “surprising finds” and affordable style. J.C. Penney’s brands — Xersion, Modern Bride, Arizona, and Liz Claiborne — performed well, along with national labels like Clarks, Skechers, and Adidas.

A Stronger Operation Under Catalyst Brands

Since early 2025, J.C. Penney has operated under Catalyst Brands, the same group managing Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand, and Nautica. This integration has allowed the company to streamline sourcing, distribution, and administrative operations. Management expects the full benefits of these synergies to be realized by 2027.

During Q2, the cost of goods sold dropped 2.4%, helping offset higher tariffs and shipping costs. The company said better markdown control expanded category margins and helped maintain profitability amid challenging conditions.

What This Means for the Liquidation Market

This is an encouraging sign for our wholesale buyers at Orotex Liquidation. When major U.S. retailers like J.C. Penney strengthen their operations and clear excess inventory, they directly fuel the liquidation market with fresh, branded merchandise at competitive prices.

This translates into new opportunities for wholesalers, exporters, and resellers, who gain access to pallets and truckloads filled with current-season clothing and household products — many still new with retail tags.

As retailers optimize inventory and introduce new collections, the liquidation supply chain becomes more prosperous, diverse, and profitable. That’s why Orotex Liquidation is committed to closely monitoring the U.S. retail sector to bring our customers the best wholesale deals and premium liquidation pallets available in Miami.

👉 At Orotex Liquidation, we keep our clients informed about the latest retailer developments. When big brands move, liquidation buyers benefit.

Iconic retailer J.C. Penney continues pushing to refresh its image and attract a younger audience. As part of its back-to-school and fall campaign, the company announced it will add well-known brands such as Aeropostale, Volcom, and Hurley to its apparel assortment.

The retailer has also partnered with JS Jessica Simpson to deliver exclusive fashion designs and hinted at another high-profile collaboration launching in September.

A Strategy of Value and Style

According to Michelle Wlazlo, J.C. Penney’s brand CEO, the goal is to sell clothes and “redefine the season” by offering both style and affordability. The fall campaign includes TV ads like Morning Routine and Drop-off, which will air across cable and Hispanic media outlets in the U.S.

This effort builds on the company’s new “Yes, J.C. Penney” brand positioning, introduced earlier this year. The positioning aims to modernize the retailer’s image and reconnect with consumers who had overlooked the brand.

Strengthening Ties with Catalyst Brands

Adding Aeropostale further deepens J.C. Penney’s ties within Catalyst Brands, the group formed by Authentic Brands Group, Shein, and Simon Property Group. Catalyst also manages well-known names such as Brooks Brothers, Lucky Brand, Nautica, and Eddie Bauer.

Challenges and Opportunities

The announcement comes at a critical time: in Q1 2025, J.C. Penney reported net sales down 4.3% yearly to $1.3 billion, while net losses rose 9.5% to $69 million. Still, the retailer committed to maintaining pre-tariff pricing on school basics, reinforcing its value-focused strategy.

What This Means for the Liquidation Market

At Orotex Liquidation, we track these retail shifts closely because they highlight a key trend: large U.S. department stores are betting on youth-focused brands and exclusive launches to stay competitive. This translates into greater opportunities for wholesalers, resellers, and exporters when sourcing liquidation pallets and lots of brand-new apparel with tags.

Moves like this ensure that the liquidation market continues to be filled with fresh inventory from well-known fashion labels, arriving to our Miami warehouse ready for export worldwide.

👉 If your business focuses on resale or wholesale clothing, updates like these confirm why liquidation pallets remain one of the best sources of brand-name inventory at bulk pricing.

In the retail world, the numbers don’t lie: the off-price model isn’t just growing — it’s taking over. According to a recent UBS report, off-price retailers have gained a significant share of the market once dominated by traditional department stores.

At Orotex, this trend hits close to home — it’s at the very core of our business.

What Does “Off-Price” Mean?

For those unfamiliar with the term, “off-price” refers to a business model that sells original branded products — including clothing, shoes, accessories, and general merchandise — at significantly reduced prices. This merchandise often comes from:

Overstock

Past seasons

Inventory clearance

Store closures

Customer returns in good condition

But make no mistake — this is new, authentic merchandise, often with its original tags.

Brands Dominating the Off-Price Space

Retailers like Nordstrom Rack, Macy’s Backstage, TJ Maxx, Ross, Burlington, and Marshalls are prime examples of this model. UBS reports:

In the U.S., TJX (parent company of TJ Maxx and Marshalls) now operates over 3,700 stores.

Burlington plans to open 100 new locations this year.

Ross is on track to launch 90 more stores.

This growth is not only massive but consistent — year after year — even in a shifting economic environment. What’s more, sales, margins, and profits in the off-price space now outperform those of traditional retail.

What Does This Have to Do with Orotex?

Everything.

At Orotex Liquidation, we are an active player in the off-price ecosystem. What big retailers see as excess inventory or aging stock becomes a golden opportunity for our clients to resell branded merchandise at competitive prices.

💡 We offer a wide selection of new, tagged apparel from well-known U.S. brands — shipped directly from our warehouse in Miami.

Whether you sell by the bale in your country, run a boutique, or resell on social media, the off-price model lets you compete with style, quality, and solid profit margins.

The Rise of Off-Price in 2025

The UBS report confirms what many already suspected: off-price isn’t a trend — it’s a proven and growing strategy. Here are some key stats:

📊 66.6% of total retail sales in this segment now come from off-price stores — an increase of 210 basis points in just one year.
💰 These stores now capture 81% of the net profit in the category, far surpassing traditional retailers.
📦 While department stores increased inventory by just 1%, off-price retailers grew theirs by 13% to meet rising demand.
🔮 This growth is expected to continue, as off-pricers have shown superior adaptability to market changes, tariffs, and economic shifts.

What This Means for You as a Reseller

It means you’re standing in front of a solid, profitable, and proven business opportunity. And the best part? At Orotex Liquidation, we provide you with direct access to this off-price ecosystem, eliminating the need to compete against the big players.

🎯 If you play your cards right, you could become the leading off-price seller in your city or country.

And if you’ve ever considered reselling American apparel, now is the time.

At Orotex, we offer:

✅ New clothing pallets and truckloads
✅ Per-piece pricing designed for strong resale margins
✅ Seasonal and mixed stock options
✅ Top brands your customers already want
✅ Direct service from our warehouse in Hialeah, Florida

Men’s Wearhouse has officially expanded its “Made in USA” initiative by launching a new ready-to-wear line called American Bespoke. Designed in collaboration with renowned menswear designer Joseph Abboud, the collection is manufactured at Tailored Brands’ New Bedford, Massachusetts factory.

The new collection features a patriotic touch, with jackets including a removable ribbon inspired by the American flag. Full suits in the collection start at $599, while separates such as jackets and trousers are priced from $170, making the range accessible to a wide audience looking for American-made formalwear.

According to company leadership, the idea behind expanding the “Made in USA” program was set in motion before the latest discussions around tariffs and global trade tensions. John Tighe, President of Tailored Brands, emphasized that the decision to refocus on American manufacturing was part of a long-term strategy, independent of shifting trade policies.

“We’ve been making suits in America well before this tariff discussion,” Tighe explained in an interview. “We believe in maintaining a strong ‘Made in America’ position, and we’re committed to telling that story.”

Although Men’s Wearhouse continues to source a portion of its inventory internationally, the American Bespoke line aims to highlight the company’s domestic capabilities and craftsmanship.

The new suits and separates have already been rolling out across various Men’s Wearhouse locations over the past few months, with a major promotional push during the first quarter of 2025.

A Shift Amid Economic Uncertainty

The launch of the American Bespoke collection comes at a time when economic uncertainty is affecting both consumer sentiment and retail strategies. According to recent reports, U.S. consumer confidence fell by 11% this month, driven largely by concerns over the ongoing global trade disputes. Inflation expectations are also at their highest levels since the early 1980s.

In this climate, initiatives like “Made in USA” campaigns are gaining attention. Other retail leaders, such as Etsy’s CEO Josh Silverman, have also encouraged shoppers to prioritize domestically produced goods as a way to navigate potential price increases tied to tariffs.

Meanwhile, U.S. retail sales still showed strength in March, with a 3.6% year-over-year increase, suggesting that consumers may be accelerating purchases in anticipation of future cost rises.

Economists, however, remain cautious. Mark Zandi, Chief Economist at Moody’s, recently warned that the odds of a recession are rising, particularly if trade disputes remain unresolved.

Related Opportunities for Wholesalers

While Men’s Wearhouse focuses on expanding its American-made offerings, wholesale buyers looking for men’s formalwear inventory can find opportunities to stock high-quality apparel through alternative channels.

Wholesale Men’s Dress Shirts

Wholesale Men’s Dress Pants

Mixed Men’s Apparel Lots

Men’s Ties in Bulk

Clothing Truckload Liquidation

For businesses seeking to source branded men’s apparel in bulk, these options offer competitive advantages in today’s evolving retail landscape.

How This Collaboration Impacts the Liquidation and Surplus Inventory Market

At Orotex Liquidation, we continuously monitor these inventory cycles to offer our international clients access to new, brand-name merchandise at wholesale prices.

Here’s why collaborations like Gap x Dôen matter:

Aspect

Impact on Liquidation

Higher Inventory Turnover

Limited collections create faster stock rotation, pushing older inventory into the surplus market sooner.

Increased Brand Value

Strong collaborations boost brand prestige, allowing aged inventory to retain higher resale value even in secondary markets.

New Product Categories

Introducing menswear (for Dôen) means potential surplus in new categories that previously didn’t exist.

International Factory Production

Manufactured in factories participating in the RISE program, enhancing ESG credentials—an attractive factor for global surplus buyers.

Why It’s Good News for Liquidators Like Orotex

Premium Inventory Availability:
Limited-edition pieces tend to hit the surplus market after seasonal periods, offering liquidators like Orotex the opportunity to purchase branded goods with high consumer appeal at discounted rates.

Brand-Safe Export Opportunities:
Surplus inventory, especially from collaborations, can be positioned for international export to markets in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, where brand recognition remains strong but direct competition with U.S. retail is minimized.

Sustainability Appeal:
The RISE program’s involvement means that merchandise associated with ethical production practices becomes increasingly attractive to eco-conscious resellers and markets abroad.

Walmart is expanding GoLocal, its white-label home delivery service, to position itself as a key player in the logistics sector and attract customers seeking fast and efficient solutions.

Since its launch in 2021, GoLocal has grown significantly and now serves 10 retail sectors, including beauty, home goods, and sports. Recently, the platform reached a new milestone: 30 million completed deliveries, a 150% increase from the 12 million recorded in November 2023. This growth has been fueled by strategic partnerships, such as its recent integration with IBM’s order management system, making it easier for more businesses to adopt the service.

Walmart created GoLocal as a third-party delivery service, initially relying on its own employees, independent contractors, and logistics companies. Its first partner was Home Depot, and since then, it has added brands like 1-800 Flowers, Books-A-Million, Hibbett, Sur La Table, UrbanStem, and Sally Beauty.

“There isn’t a single industry that hasn’t inquired about our delivery solutions,” said Rina Hurst, Vice President of Walmart GoLocal. The company offers options such as ship-from-store, same-day delivery, and customized solutions for retailers looking to strengthen their logistics without relying on traditional carriers.

The Last-Mile Competition: A Sector in Transformation

As Walmart expands GoLocal, competition in the last-mile delivery space intensifies. Amazon, which surpassed UPS and FedEx in 2022 to become the largest delivery operator in the U.S., processed 5.9 billion deliveries in 2023, averaging over 16 million daily.

However, Walmart isn’t trying to replicate Amazon’s model, which focuses on its sellers within its platform. Instead, GoLocal targets retailers who need to enhance their delivery networks without building their infrastructure.

Changes among significant carriers have also impacted the logistics landscape. UPS announced it would cut its shipping volume with Amazon by half by 2026, while the U.S. Postal Service stopped handling UPS deliveries under its SurePost program. Additionally, uncertainty in global trade, such as new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods (home to giants like Temu and Shein), could disrupt the capacity of some transportation networks.

Despite the emergence of new companies like UniUni, Veho, OSM, and Roadie, the major players—Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and USPS—still dominate the market. However, Walmart is betting on its infrastructure as a competitive advantage: with 4,700 stores and 16,000 pickup points across the U.S., the company has a geographic reach that’s hard to match.

Technology and Efficiency: The Key to GoLocal’s Growth

To optimize deliveries, Walmart has implemented artificial intelligence in route planning for its Spark drivers, which use independent contractors for deliveries. Thanks to these improvements, GoLocal has tripled Sally Beauty’s delivery volume while maintaining consistent operational efficiency.

Additionally, a consumer electronics company—whose name has not been disclosed—achieved nearly 100% on-time delivery rates, significantly reducing cancellations and returns. According to GoLocal’s data, its same-day delivery on-time rate is 98.5%.

The last-mile delivery sector had changed dramatically since 2020 when the pandemic tested the logistical capabilities of many companies. Today, options like drones, one-hour deliveries, and on-demand platforms like DoorDash and Uber have transformed consumer expectations.

“Retailers are becoming more strategic with their value proposition,” explained Hurst. “If a customer needs a product immediately, we can charge a premium fee. But if their priority is a scheduled delivery for tomorrow or a few days later, we can offer alternatives that foster long-term loyalty.”

Reflection from Orotex Liquidation: What Does This Mean for the Industry?

The growth of GoLocal is an example of how large companies are betting on logistics optimization as a key factor in customer experience. Wholesalers and distributors must evaluate new strategies to improve their operations in a context where consumers expect speed and flexibility.

Understanding these trends is crucial for companies like Orotex Liquidation, which operates in the wholesale space. Efficiency in last-mile delivery can make the difference between a repeat sale and a customer looking for alternatives. While giants like Walmart innovate with intelligent routing and customized options, wholesalers must consider adapting to an ever-evolving market through strategic partnerships or optimizing their distribution chains.

The logistics challenge isn’t just about speed—creating a smoother, more reliable shopping experience. As the industry continues to evolve, staying ahead of these trends will be essential for businesses aiming to thrive in a competitive landscape.

A Kohl’s store. Newer stores outside the Midwest, where the brand has its strongest presence, haven’t been performing on par with the well-established locations, according to analysts from Evercore ISI.

Published on December 3, 2024

A little over a year ago, Kohl’s was optimistic about expansion, with CEO Tom Kingsbury claiming every location was turning a profit. The company kept up with that optimism in 2023 by adding six new stores, relocating one, and closing two, as per its proxy filing from May. This approach has stood in clear contrast to Macy’s, which has continually shut down locations over recent years.

However, Kohl’s might have to rethink its position.

During an earnings call this week, Kingsbury conceded that many of Kohl’s strategies to revive sales had fallen short, leading the company to pull back on several initiatives. Ashley Buchanan, currently the CEO of Michaels, is set to replace Kingsbury as the new CEO in January.

Neither Kingsbury nor Chief Financial Officer Jill Timm provided direct answers to inquiries about the possibility of closing stores. When questioned, the company did not offer immediate comments regarding store closures.

Timm explained to analysts that the company regularly reviews its store network to ensure it’s operating efficiently. While she acknowledged that most stores are profitable, closing some of them is “not an easy financial decision.” She also highlighted Kohl’s off-mall locations as a competitive advantage, noting they bring in significant revenue.

Even so, Timm revealed that approximately 10% of Kohl’s 1,174 stores aren’t generating sufficient revenue, despite the fact that “over 90% of our locations remain profitable.”

She also pointed out that Kohl’s stores are typically large, averaging over 80,000 square feet. This space has been utilized to accommodate partnerships with brands like Babies R Us without reducing the retail area. Additionally, Kohl’s is shifting focus back to its in-house brands after realizing that prioritizing third-party brands over private labels was a misstep.

Still, some analysts believe Kohl’s may need to downsize significantly.

According to Evercore ISI, led by analyst Michael Binetti, Kohl’s has struggled to maintain the same level of success in regions outside the Midwest, where its roots and loyal customer base lie. Stores opened outside this core area over the last 15 years have underperformed, dragging down average sales. More than 300 of these locations appear to have been consistently overlooked for investment, and yet the company has resisted closures.

“We believe Kohl’s could initiate its first large-scale closure program as early as 2025,” the analysts predicted.

With the U.S. presidential election scheduled for this Tuesday, brands and agencies are bracing for a potentially prolonged period of uncertainty.

Some companies have stated they’ll reduce advertising altogether in the days immediately following the election. Others are closely monitoring ad rates and performance, prepared to make quick adjustments if any major developments arise. A few name brands are using this time to promote messages related to issues that are relevant to them.

“Typically, news programming does well for our clients. But during this time, we just don’t want to waste anyone’s money,” said Suzanne Silber, executive vice president of integrated media planning at Eden Collective. Her agency’s plan is to scale back spending throughout the week and hold off on running TV ads during news programs on Election Day and the following day.

For some brands, cutting back on advertising during this period is especially challenging. Advertisers have struggled to determine the right timing for year-end promotions during an already shortened holiday season, with only 27 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Silber noted that she wants to reserve ad spending for when it will have the greatest impact, particularly as the holiday season approaches, when she expects prices to become more competitive. “We’re not asking consumers to make choices at a time when they can’t focus on them,” she said. “We want to see how things play out and gauge how long the election hangover lasts.”

Similarly, Katya Constantine, CEO of the digital agency DigiShopGirl Media, expects some brands will pull back on media spending heading into November 5. She added that brands will likely increase spending closer to the weekend. Singles’ Day, the major shopping event in China on November 11, has sparked more interest among U.S. brands in recent years.

The logistics company has launched a new omnichannel facility in Ohio to manage Levi’s wholesale, retail, and e-commerce distribution.

October 23, 2024

Maersk Unveils Multichannel Fulfillment Center in Ohio

To enhance its distribution and logistics network, Levi Strauss & Co. has teamed up with Maersk, which has recently opened a fulfillment center in Groveport, Ohio. According to an October 9 press release, this center will play a key role in expanding Levi’s omnichannel capabilities.

The new 1.2-million-square-foot facility is designed to support Levi’s wholesale, retail, and e-commerce operations. The services provided by this center include a full range of logistics solutions, from consolidating shipments at the point of origin to final fulfillment across various sales channels.

Though operations at the Ohio facility officially began in August, it is already making a difference by improving on-time deliveries, cutting down container handling times, and enhancing overall speed and efficiency. The facility is also a strategic move that allows Levi’s to focus more heavily on its direct-to-consumer (DTC-first) business model, a priority the company has emphasized in recent years.

Analysis:

As Levi’s increasingly turns to third-party logistics partners, it’s adopting advanced warehouse technologies often used by major players in the supply chain industry, like Maersk.

The Groveport facility is equipped with two EuroSort sorting systems, which streamline the fulfillment process. According to a Maersk spokesperson, EuroSort systems have 40 induction points and 600 order locations, which help match products to customer orders.

“This technology has proven to be highly efficient in apparel sorting. It operates at high speeds and can process as many as 28,000 products per hour, with the capacity to handle up to 100 million units annually. The system also manages leftover cartons automatically. By enabling batch picking, it reduces the number of trips pickers need to make, allowing them to fulfill multiple orders at once,” the spokesperson explained.

Currently, the first EuroSort system is 70% complete, with the second system expected to be installed by November. Full operation of the facility is scheduled for early 2025, the spokesperson added.

The warehouse also utilizes Maersk’s Warehouse Management System (WMS), a platform that provides real-time visibility into inventory. This enables Levi’s to adjust production levels as needed, and the facility can also function as a training center to further improve operational efficiency.

Levi Strauss’ decision to partner with Maersk comes after the retailer announced plans to move away from its primarily owned-and-operated distribution network in the U.S. and Europe to cut fulfillment costs, as outlined in a recent Q2 earnings call.

This Ohio facility marks the 10th global center operated by Maersk for Levi’s, with most other locations situated in Asia, according to the release.

“This Maersk-run facility is an important part of our strategy to transition to a hybrid distribution network. We aim to balance our own operations with the capabilities of technologically advanced 3PL providers like Maersk,” said Craig Jones, Levi Strauss’ Senior Vice President of Global Distribution and Logistics Operations.

Implications for the Liquidation Industry

The logistical and technological advancements implemented by Levi Strauss in partnership with Maersk can serve as an insightful model for the liquidation industry. Although Levi’s focus is on retail, many of the improvements they’ve made are highly applicable to liquidation businesses, which also manage large volumes of products and must optimize their logistics processes.

Omnichannel Fulfillment Optimization: Jean liquidation businesses, operating in both wholesale and retail, could benefit significantly from adopting an omnichannel infrastructure. Integrating multiple sales and distribution channels allows companies to consolidate inventory, streamline product delivery, and reduce response times to customers.

Automation and Efficient Sorting: The use of automated systems, such as EuroSort, which processes thousands of products at high speeds, could be a game-changer for liquidation companies. Handling large volumes of products efficiently and accurately would allow companies to fulfill orders more quickly, which is crucial in the liquidation space where time and accuracy matter.

Cost Savings with Third-Party Logistics (3PL): Just as Levi’s is embracing a hybrid distribution model, liquidation companies can benefit from outsourcing parts of their logistics operations to specialized providers. This approach allows businesses to reduce overhead, scale operations as needed, and remain agile—especially useful for small to mid-sized liquidation businesses looking to expand.

Real-Time Inventory Visibility: Implementing a Warehouse Management System (WMS) that offers real-time inventory visibility enables companies to manage stock more effectively. For liquidation companies, this ability to track stock levels instantly and make quick adjustments is critical for maintaining accurate inventories and meeting customer demand efficiently.

Improving the Customer Experience: Speed and efficiency in fulfillment operations are key to customer satisfaction. By adopting logistics improvements similar to those Levi Strauss has implemented, liquidation companies can enhance their service and become more competitive in the marketplace.

“Fast shipping is the driving force in online retail,” said Jason Murray, CEO of Shipium and former supply chain VP at Amazon. “Prime made that clear. You can do all you want with marketing, checkout features, and one-click ordering, but in the end, speed is what drives everything.”

Amazon’s Expansion

Amazon’s focus on real estate demonstrates this. The company nearly doubled its capacity in the last two years to meet demand, CFO Brian Olsavsky explained during a February earnings call. Fulfillment center growth played a significant role: in 2021, Amazon grew its U.S. warehouse footprint by 30%, according to MWPVL International.

However, even with these investments, Amazon hasn’t yet achieved its desired delivery speeds. Prime’s one-day shipping has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. As a result, Amazon is now turning to other parts of its operations to improve its shipping speed.

Moderating Fulfillment Center Growth:

“We’re seeing a moderation in our fulfillment center spending,” Olsavsky said, adding that future expansion would likely match growth in other segments of the company.

Analysts point out that this deceleration was expected after the initial surge in e-commerce fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic subsided.

Fulfilling Customer Demand:

As online orders surged, retailers adjusted or accelerated their logistics strategies. Foot traffic in physical stores dropped as the pandemic hit, with many consumers shifting to online shopping. Olsavsky noted in June 2021 that Amazon had been playing catch-up to balance supply with demand—fulfillment expenses as a portion of net sales rose from 15.2% in 2020 to 16% in 2021, according to the company’s 10-K filing.

Growing Distribution Network:

Adding more facilities in different markets has allowed Amazon to increase its capacity while positioning inventory closer to customers, leading to quicker, more cost-effective deliveries. Other retailers in the e-commerce space are following suit.

“The demand for logistics space in e-commerce has leveled off compared to last year, but it’s still higher than pre-pandemic levels,” said Heather Belfor, director of U.S. research at Prologis, a major logistics real estate firm that lists Amazon as its top customer.

Walmart is also building out its network of warehouses and investing in automation to compete with Amazon’s Prime service through Walmart+. Similarly, Target has four new distribution centers underway, with more planned.

Investing in Transportation: Although Amazon is slowing down the expansion of its fulfillment centers, the company is still making significant investments in other areas of its operations. Olsavsky hinted at further investments in transportation in 2022.

With more personnel and vehicles in its fleet, Amazon aims to improve its ability to deliver to rural areas across the U.S. without relying as heavily on UPS and the Postal Service, said Marc Wulfraat, president of MWPVL International.

“They’re working toward full control over their delivery process,” Wulfraat explained. “Eventually, they want to phase out partnerships with UPS and USPS. The clues are there.”

The following chart highlights Amazon’s vast distribution footprint compared to other major retailers like Walmart and Target, showcasing its lead in both active and future warehouse space.

Taking more control over its transportation network would help Amazon manage rising shipping costs. The company reported increased expenses related to third-party carriers in the fourth quarter, making an argument for ramping up its own delivery capabilities.

Looking Ahead:

Experts say Amazon is still eyeing other long-term opportunities. The company could expand its network of delivery stations, build up protections against global supply chain disruptions, or push further into the grocery business.

No one expects Amazon to stop expanding its fulfillment network altogether. “Slowing down” is a relative term for a company that has scaled its distribution network at a rate unmatched by any competitor. Olsavsky even mentioned during the Q4 earnings call that spending on warehouses could pick up again in the future.
